Game of Thrones star “Jack Gleeson” to return to screen for Famous Five remake

An Irish actor who retired nine years ago will be returning to screens for a role in the BBC’s The Famous Five series. Gleeson played the role of the wicked young king who was mad for power in 26 episodes of the fantasy drama. He revealed in interviews that the experience of acting full-time had made him less “passionate” about the job. However, his latest role couldn’t be further from the fictional world of Westeros.

Almost a decade on from his famous and horrid exit from HBO’s Game of Thrones, Joffrey Baratheon actor Jack Gleeson is making his comeback on to the small screen. In the role of Wentworth in BBC’s series adaptation of  The Famous Five. Based on the 21 Famous Five novels Blyton penned between 1942 and 1963, the series follows five young explorers as they encounter faithless, action-packed adventures, mysteries, full of danger, and secrets.

Cast in The Famous Five series

Gleeson will take on the part of Wentworth in the upcoming The Famous Five series. He’s not the only star announced for the series: Diaana Babnicova, Elliott Rose, Kit Rakusen, and Flora Jacoby Richardson have been cast to play the titular group. The BBC announced on Wednesday that Diaana Babnicova will take on the role of George while Elliott Rose will play Julian, Kit Rakusen will portray Dick, and Flora Jacoby Richardson will bring Anne to life.

Of course, no Famous Five reboot would be complete without canine companion Timmy, played by Bearded Collie Cross, Kip. Gleeson and the other cast members including Ann Akinjirin will play Fanny while Ted Lasso’s James Lance will take on the part of Quentin.

Tim Kirkby said in a statement. “Together with the brilliant Jack, Ann, James, and Diana, we can’t wait to bring these glorious, action-filled, epic, family adventures to the screen.”

Filming is currently taking place in the South West of the United Kingdom and a release date has not yet been set. On Game of Thrones, Gleeson rose to prominence for his role as the villainous Joffrey, who met his demise in season 6 in 2014.

While Gleeson’s GOT character was synonymous with striking blonde looks and boyish facial features, it’s safe to say Wentworth is the polar opposite. Gleeson has instead opted for a jet-black Barnet for the role, complete with a bushy mustache. He also returned to TV in 2020 with a comedy series Out Of Her Mind on the BBC, starring Sara Pascoe, Cash Holland, and Fiona Button.

Gleeson will also take part in the upcoming film In the Land of Saints and Sinners, which stars Liam Neeson and Kerry Condon. Read More
